Cirque du Soleil OVO opens March 16th at Microsoft Theater

Following a two-year hiatus brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Cirque du Soleil is finally back in LA! And boy, do we need it right now. The French-Canadian contemporary circus company makes its triumphant return with OVOwhich invites guests to “rush headlong into a new ecosystem.” OVO is about insects: the tiny creatures surrounding us who work, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy in motion.

According to the official website, “The show plunges the audience into the hidden universe alive at our feet; an ecosystem teeming with life and unseen beings – insects that work, eat, crawl, flutter, feast, fight and court among each other in an ongoing explosion of energy and movement.” Among these multi-legged invertebrates are Amazing Ants, Flexible Dragonflies, Silky Spiders, Crazy Crickets, along with the Colorful Ecosystem itself.

Ovo is the Portuguese word for “egg,” and the storyline follows the insects after a mysterious egg appears in their world, sparking awe, curiosity and confusion. The egg represents a timeless symbol of the life cycle and birth of insects, which is the underlying thread of the show. There is also a love story aspect to OVO, as a gawky insect falls for a fabulous, beautiful ladybug — but will she return his affection?
