Imagine a mashup of Olivia Newton John’s “Let’s Get Physical,” Jamie Lee Curtis in Perfect, and Jennifer Beals in Flashdance, and you get Physical on Apple TV+, a story about a tormented San Diego housewife desperate to be thin and successful. The voice of her eating disorder is heard through a comically dark narration. Sheila Rubin (Rose Byrne) has ambition that gets her into a lot of trouble as her drive for success leads her down many troublesome roads including theft and deception.
It’s hard not to see Sheila as a villain of sorts, but her likable ambition shines through her determination and she will do anything to get to where she’s going. She does have a support system in her new best friend Greta (Dierdre Friel), who is the most lovable supportive character, who finds out about her husband’s strange obsession via a stolen camcorder.
This story also couldn’t be told without the fantastic characters Bunny and Tyler (played by Della Saba and Lou Taylor Pucci), who seem to be plucked straight out of a Quentin Tarantino film. These two are intertwined through their love of aerobics and wish for success. Sheila takes advantage of their generosity and sets out on a journey to re-create what they had begun, only to find that they are out for revenge. This 80s flashback series features outstanding performances galore, and all your favorite hit songs, too. Fun!
