Tom Hanks is one of the most beloved and respected actors in Hollywood — and for good reason. He was also the first A-list star to get contract the coronavirus earlier this year and has since used his platform to stress how important it is that the whole world takes this pandemic seriously. Hanks also believes that the “sea of change” forced on the movie industry by COVID-19 that’s resulted in major films streaming when they would normally have aired in theaters “has been a slow train coming.” This all brings us to News of the World, the Oscar winner’s latest epic directed by Paul Greengrass that will premiere in U.S. theaters on Christmas Day but stream internationally on Netflix. Based on Paulette Jiles’ best-selling book, the western drama follows a widowed Civil War veteran (played by Hanks) on a quest to return a young girl, Johanna Leonberger (Helena Zengel), who was stolen by natives as an infant to her last remaining family. However, Johanna wants to stay with her Kiowa captives with whom she has grown up rather than travel hundreds of miles to live with an aunt and uncle in a place she’s never called home. News of the World also stars Michael Covino, Fred Hechinger, Neil Sandilands, Thomas Francis Murphy and Mare Winningham.
