John Mayer’s new album SOB Rock will be released on July 16. The first single, Last Train Home, is out now and the music video and song have a very 80s feel with the period videography, synthesizer, Maren Morris in a fringe pleather jacket, and a cute Labrador Retriever stealing the spotlight. Last Train Home also features percussionist Lenny Castro of Toto and keyboardist Greg Phillinganes. A mix of Richard Marx meets Kenny G! John Mayer doesn’t disappoint — his vocals are like butter and his guitar skills are always on point. I love the throwback to the 80s. This is his first album since 2017 and he will be on tour this summer with Dead & Company. He is an amazing musician and I remember jamming out to him at the LA Forum 10 years ago!
Although he’s had several songs at the top of the charts, Mayer considers Your Body Is a Wonderland to be his only hit song. In a Rolling Stone interview, he said, “It’s the biggest hit I’ve ever had, maybe will ever have. There wasn’t a lot of music in that song. It’s a novelty tune. I don’t have Lady Gaga-sized hits.” This is his eighth studio album. Does that mean this summer we may see John perform on yacht rock weekend? A girl can dream!
