Hollywood Bowl Annual Jazz Festival June 15-16, 2024

The Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival is coming up quick, and Arsenio Hall is back to host it. It kicks off on Saturday, June 15th, and gates open at 1:30. Now, because you are a reader of LA Arts, then you are already well aware of the benefits of arriving early and pre-partying at the Highland Camrose Park (sight of the Bowl picnic every year). However, that might just be the pre-pre party this time around being the Kagan Patio will be hosting “A Tribute to Jazz/Art Fusion” from until 3:30 when the music gets going. And the music will be aplenty:

Day one features Jodeci (yes, Forever My Lady), Andra Day (Grammy Award winner and awesome portrayal of Billie Holiday), Christian McBride (8 time Grammy award winning bassist), Cimafunk (straight outta Cuba), Charles Lloyd (recipient of the Ordre de Chevalier des Arts et Lettres), Mulatu Astatke (father of Ethio-jazz), and Alex Isley (daughter of).

Day two features Kamasi Washington (just dropped The Epic), Robert Glasper (4 Grammy’s, 9 noms [in 8 categories]) with special guest Yebba, Cory Henry (3 Grammys with Snarky Puppy), The Soul Rebels (N’ola+hip hop), Baby Rose (latest album is Through and Through), Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band (together for over 26 years), and Anessa Strings (bassist & vocalist!).

Both days will also feature an octet from The Herbie Hancock Institute, as well as the LAUSD Beyond the Bell All-City Jazz Big Band. If this festival sounds familiar, that is because it essentially is the Playboy Jazz festival rebranded (since 2022).
