What do you know about Salvador Dalí- the Spanish Surrealist artist? It’s hard to find an artist who has imprinted more on 20th century media and art than Dalí. His most well-known painting – The Persistance of Memory – features images of drooping clock faces. Dalí became a devotee of cubism and the avant-garde movements in art in the 1920s and is probably the key figure most of us connect with these movements.
Dalíland stars Sir Ben Kingsley as the titular Salvador Dalí, one of the most world-renowned artists of the 20th century and focuses on the later years of the strange and fascinating marriage between Dalí and his wife, Gala (Barbara Sukowa), as their seemingly unshakable bond begins to stress and fracture. Set in New York and Spain in 1974, the film is told through the eyes of James, a young assistant keen to make his name in the art world.
The cast ofDalíland is art-house royalty; Lesley Manville, Tim Roth, Frank Dillane and Ezra Miller are also in the film, which should not be missed. Set in New York and Spain in the early 1970s, the story follows a young assistant assigned to prepare Dalí for an upcoming gallery show.
Directed by Mary Harron (American Psycho), Dalíland is a peek inside the tumultuous and creative world of this extraordinary genius.
