A science fiction action comedy is not what you’d expect from Oscar winner Cate Blanchett or from Hostel director Eli Roth. But that is exactly what you get with Borderlands, which is based on a video game of the same name.

Th film follows Lilith (played by Blanchett), an outlaw who returns to her home planet of Pandora after being hired by the most powerful man in the galaxy, Ariel, to find his daughter. Once back on the wasteland where she grew up, Lilith teams up with a band of intergalactic misfits that include a tiny explosives expert, a strongman, a former soldier, a droid and a scientist.

“The fate of the universe could be in their hands but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other,” Lionsgate teases.

The ensemble cast includes Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana Greenblatt and Edgar Ramirez. Curtis warned about the dangers of adapting such a popular video game, telling EW at Comic-Con 2024 in San Diego: “There’s nothing meaner than an unhappy gamer fan … If you change the canon, if you change the lore, if you alter what they understand is the reality of the game, you must honor the reality that they live in because it is a game they live in.”

Borderlands opens on August 9, 2024.
